What is Refractive Surgery?
Refractive surgery is a type of eye surgery done to correct common eye problems like near-sightedness or astigmatism. Patients undergo the surgery to reduce their dependence on such aids as glasses or contact lenses. LASIK surgery is the most popular type of refractive surgery performed in the United States, and it is one of the eye care procedures performed at the Carolinas Eye Center.
In LASIK surgery, the ophthalmologist uses a laser to reshape the cornea and give the patient normal vision. The procedure has a high rate of success. Most patients, therefore, will no longer need glasses or contact lenses. While the effects are permanent, some patients may need to undergo the procedure again as they age. It all depends on the unique situation.
LASIK surgery can be bladed or bladeless. In bladed LASIK surgery, the doctor uses a tool called a microkeratome to create a circular flap in the cornea. In bladeless surgery, the doctor uses a femtosecond laser to do the same thing. After accessing the cornea, the surgeon uses another laser to give it a normal shape. The surgeon then replaces the flap.
What is an IOL?
An IOL is an “intra-ocular lens,” and it is an artificial lens used to treat cataract patients. Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure, during which the surgeon removes the defective lens and replaces it with the IOL.
